Bio

Ed Raybould is an oil painter based in High Wycombe who graduated with a bachelor’s of Fine Art from Arts University Bournemouth in 2019.

Influenced by 70’s horror films and artists such as Rothko and Tony Bevan, he is fascinated by the affect theory behind the colour red and the strong emotional connotations that comes with the colour such as love and death. He explores the language of paint using vigorous mark-making revealing the energetic yet tactful process to create an intensity in the work.

He layers different brush marks on top of each other and varies the thickness of oil paint and the speed and size of marks to create a sense of depth, it allows him to make some areas chaotic and busy and other areas slow and more still. The layers of painterly brushstrokes create confusion as to which marks are in the foreground and background. This further adds a sense of non-reality and fantasy. He combines different transparent colours with non-transparent ones to add to the manipulation of depth and layers, as well as exaggerating the ghostliness of the figures as the viewer can see through them.

Raybould currently works with an organisation called Watch This Space, a pop-up public exhibition in Bournemouth in which he helps curate as well as display his own work.
